Audience Research Conclusion

Conducting both Questionnaires and Interviews has allowed us to gather more rich accurate data. The results have provided us with exactly what we need to provide a product to suit our audience. Our research has allowed us to find out exactly what our audience wants from our product our job is to provide this for them. We will use all aspects of our research and combine results to suit as many of our targeted audience as possible.

This research has made planning for our final product a lot easier as before we did not know what our audience’s likes and dislikes were, we are now more informed and up to date with what people like.

Planning our final product should be a lot easier than before as we now know a lot more information than we did to start with. We can include our own knowledge to make our product even better. We will design our product with as much inspiration from our results and improve where we can, in theory we are giving our audience exactly what they have asked for.

By conducting our research we discovered:
-Image is important
-Our target audience had high interest in gossip and up-to-date celeb news
-Colour determind the audience that we attracted we will modify the colours in our product to suit our target audience
-Our audience research has allowed us to find out exactly what our target audience's likes and dislikes are, we will adapt these into our product.

Audience Behaviour Theory: Conclusion

We used Richard Dyer’s utopian solution to motivate and engage our target audience, offering them the ‘solutions’ of ‘energy’ through the use of editing (colour and images) and ‘community’ by including conversational information- providing the reader with topics of conversation therefore creating a media group. We also applied Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs by aiming our product at a specific target audience; here we are applying affiliation- the need to belong to a group. We are targeting a certain group of people therefore there is a strong bias on behalf of the audience to fit it with this group. From both theories we are allowing our target audience to become part of a ‘community’. Or through reading our magazine building their own community. We plan to provide them with ‘gossip’ and ‘factual’ information in which they can share with others of the same social interests, creating our target audience. This will allow us to become more involved with our audience. Through using both Richard Dyer’s utopian theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs we can engage the audience and fulfil their theories to make our product interesting and fun.

Burton's Theory:Our target audience

Graeme Burtons Theory

Burtons Theory is a theory where the target audience is identified through the difference between socially grouped audiences and media grouped audiences. Being socially grouped can involve being grouped by your age, your gender, your race, your class or your place in society etc. Being media grouped involves being grouped by their relationship with the media, such as film-goers, computer game users or what type of genre they are interested in and so on.

Socially Grouped: Our Target Audience
Age: Between the ages of 17 – 25
Gender: Targeted at Females
Race: Aimed at all races.
Social Status: B C1 – middle & working class
Location: Would appeal to the Western.

We have chosen to target our audience at young females between the ages of 17 and 25 this is because a large amount of music magazines are seen to be aimed at either younger children or have a more male tendency. So we thought it would be a good idea to produce a magazine of the same genre but targeted for women to be interested in. We haven’t really chosen a specific race to aim our magazine at because we wanted to aim it at a wider audience, providing a magazine available to any female who is interested in the chosen genre of R’n’B. We based our targeted social status on who we think will stereotypically purchase the magazine (B C1). Finally we chose the targeted location; Western because that is where we are from so we are basing it on interests around us.

Media Grouped: Our Target Audience
Music Taste:We have chosen music taste.
Favourite Genre:Our chosen genre being R’n’B
Talents:May appeal to those who are good singers or play certain instruments.

Our magazine would appeal to those interested in music. Our magazine is based on R’n’B, so it would appeal to those who prefer and have a specific taste in this genre. The magazine could also attract a wider audience e.g. females with a certain music talent like singing may be inspired by artists in the magazine.

Magazine Ideas

The genre for our music magazine will be R'n'B. We have chosen to base our magazine on R'n'B as this is the type of music we are most interested in and know most about. Our our knowledge of music and artists from the R'n'B genre will help us to improve our magazine overall.

Introduction for Foundation Portfolio: Music Magazine

For our project we have chosen to create a music magazine, this brief involves creating a front cover for the magazine, a contents page and a double spread page taking into account a range of different factors like the audience, conventions, representations, the role of technologies etc. We have chosen this because we are most interested in music and like the idea of photoshopping and creating our own magazine and feel that we could improve our photoshop skills and creating this brief will help us do so.
We are working in a pair because we think this will benefit us and our brief because we are both skilled in different ways and at different things so we could both bring a range of different elements to the design.
To make our project successful we will need to carry out a number of different researches like interviews and radio analysis. Also things like questionnaires which will give us some quantitve data which will allow us to gather some statistics.
